The city center, Piazza Garibaldi is home to a 16th century fountain, topped with the winged Lion of St. Mark. The Winged Lion is the heraldic symbol of Venice and one that can be seen throughout this region, however the one atop the fountain in Asolo looks different.

While most winged lions are seen standing, the one in Piazza Garibaldi is sitting. The belief is that the Winged Lion of St. Mark was portrayed sitting in Asolo, as this was the place the wealthy businessmen of years past would come to stop and relax.

This is a unique piece of local lore that must be seen. Full of history but without the bustle of surrounding Italian cities, Asolo is still known as the place to come to escape among the elegance.

THE PROSECCO REGION

Perched on the hill just above Villa Trieste M is the fortress, La Rocca Di Asolo. It is known as the symbol of the city and is only a 20 minute walk from our property.

Thanks to many excavations it has been determined that a fortress has been in this area since before pre-Roman times. Rocca di Asolo dates back to the end of the twelfth century and beginning of the thirteenth century.

Used as a strategic line of defense until 1510, Rocca Di Asolo was also used as a lazaretto, or area of quarantine during plague times. An area of immense history, this fortress also offers the best panoramic view of Asolo and the surrounding area.
